Apple French Toast Bake – this is a recipe for a delicious breakfast that is easy to prepare and is perfect for fall days. Pieces of bread are soaked in the mixture of eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla and apple pie filling and then topped with cinnamon, oat and brown sugar, covered with maple syrup – a perfect way to start your day.
TO MAKE THE APPLE PIE FILLING - Melt butter in a pan, using medium heat; add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook for 10-15 min or until the apples soften. Leave to cool at a room temperature. Meanwhile, make French toast and cinnamon oat topping.
TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST -Spray, with a non-stick spray, a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Place pieces of bread. In a large dish, whisk eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Pour over the placed pieces of bread. Spread apple pie filling over the bread and stir, and then press so that each piece of bread is completely soaked.
TO MAKE CINNAMON OAT TOPPING - Combine oat, flour, baking powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and melted butter. Stir with spatula or your hands, until well combined. Spread over the pieces of bread and apple. Cover with plastic foliage and put in the fridge for a few hours, possibly overnight. Take it out of the fridge and leave at a room temperature for 30 minutes, before baking. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Remove the foliage. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until the topping gets golden brown and is fully baked in the middle.
