How To Make The Maple Honey Pecan Pie

Step 1. Toast the pecans

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread the pecans in a single layer on a baking sheet and toast for 8-10 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Let them cool completely before chopping.

Step 2. Make brown butter

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it turns golden brown and develops a nutty aroma. Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.

Step 3. Make the filling

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, cooled brown butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and well combined.

Step 4. Assemble the pie

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread the chopped toasted pecans evenly over the bottom of the unbaked pie crust. Pour the filling over the pecans in the crust. Arrange the pecan halves evenly over the top.

Step 5. Bake the pie

Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is set. If the crust starts browning too quickly, cover the edges with foil or use a pie crust shield.

Step 6. Cool and serve

Let the pie cool completely at room temperature before slicing and serving. Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tips for Making Maple Honey Pecan Pie

Brown the butter carefully:
Brown butter adds a delicious nutty flavor to this pie, but it can go from perfectly browned to burnt quickly. Keep an eye on it while it cooks and remove it from the heat as soon as it turns golden brown and smells nutty. If you love the flavor of brown butter, you can also try my Brown Butter Pumpkin Snickerdoodles.

Let the brown butter cool slightly:
Don't add very hot brown butter directly to the eggs. Let it cool for a few minutes before mixing it into the filling so the eggs don't start to cook.

Don't overbake the pie:
The filling will continue to set as the pie cools, so there's no need to wait until the center is completely firm in the oven. The edges should be set, while the center can have a slight jiggle. If the center looks loose or liquid, continue baking.

Protect the crust if it browns too quickly:
If the crust becomes golden brown before the filling is fully set, cover the edges with foil or use a pie crust shield. This allows the filling to continue baking without burning the crust.

Cool the pie completely before slicing:
This is one of the most important steps. The filling needs time to cool and set properly. If you slice the pie while it's still warm, the filling may be runny and won't hold its shape.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator:
Once cooled, cover the pie and refrigerate for up to 4 days. Let individual slices sit at room temperature for a little while before serving if you prefer a softer filling.

Maple Honey Pecan Pie FAQs

Do I need to toast the pecans before adding them to Maple Honey Pecan Pie?
Yes, I recommend using toasted pecans. Toasting brings out their natural flavor and makes them more aromatic, which adds even more flavor to this pie. Let them cool before chopping and adding them to the crust.

Can I use pecan halves instead of chopped pecans when making this Maple Pecan Pie?
The recipe uses chopped toasted pecans in the bottom of the crust and pecan halves on top. I recommend keeping this combination because the chopped pecans add texture throughout the filling, while the pecan halves create a beautiful finish.

How do I know when the filling for this Honey Pecan Pie is fully set?
The edges of the filling should look set, while the center can still have a slight jiggle. It should not look liquid or slosh when you gently move the pie. The filling will continue to firm up as it cools.

Should I toast the pecans before adding them to the Pecan pie?

Toast the chopped pecans before adding to the filling. The pecans halves on top do not need to be toasted beforehand.

Ingredients

  • 1 9 inch unbaked pie crust, store-bought or my homemade
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup pure maple syrup
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups toasted chopped pecans
  • ¾ cup pecan halves

Instructions

TO MAKE THE CRUST

  • Use your favorite store-bought pie crust or try my [Homemade Pie Crust].

TO MAKE THE BROWN BUTTER

  • Place the diced butter in a light-colored saucepan over medium heat. The butter will melt, then start bubbling and boiling. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, for a few minutes.
  • The butter is ready when the bubbling subsides, it turns a deep golden brown, and a nutty aroma develops. Stay close to the stove and stir constantly to prevent the butter from burning.
  • Remove from the heat and immediately pour the brown butter into a heatproof bowl. Let it cool at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  • Tip: To cool the butter faster, pour it into a bowl with a wide bottom. For a deeper flavor, scrape the browned bits from the bottom of the saucepan into the bowl.

TOAST THE PECANS

  • Spread 1½ cups pecans in a single layer on a baking sheet and toast at 350°F for 8–10 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Let them cool completely, then chop.

TO MAKE THE FILLING

  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, brown butter, eggs, vanilla, and salt until smooth.

TO ASSEMBLE THE PIE

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread the chopped toasted pecans evenly over the bottom of the pie crust.

Notes

Baking:
How do I know when the pie is done? This is an important step, so keep a close eye on the pie as it bakes. The pie is done when the crust is golden brown, the edges are set, and the center has a slight jiggle but is not overly loose or liquid. If the center is not set, continue baking. If the crust starts browning too quickly, cover the edges with foil or use a pie crust shield and continue baking until the filling is set.
Cooling:
Let the pie cool completely at room temperature before serving. If it is not cooled enough, the filling may be runny and will not hold its shape when sliced.
Storing:
Store the pie covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

  1. 5 stars
Made this pie and it was so delicious! 😍 The maple and honey flavor is amazing with the pecans. Would you recommend adding a little vanilla to the filling?

  2. OMG, this is so delicious. I’ve been cutting back on refined sugars & I liked that this recipe only uses a little brown sugar & the rest of the sweetening is honey & maple. Thank you for sharing your recipe. It is a keeper for me.

    1. Thank YOU, Doris.

I’m glad you enjoyed the pie and appreciated the use of honey and maple as natural sweeteners. It means a lot to hear this recipe is a keeper for you.

  3. My new go to pecan pie recipe. I love the maple syrup and honey together. Previously, I used Golden syrup and the honey onIy. I did not toast any pecans. If I read the recipe correctly, it appears only the pecans in the pie as opposed to the top get toasted. The top ones get plenty toasty when cooking the pie.

    1. Hi Christine,

I’m thrilled this has become your new go-to pecan pie. The maple-and-honey combo really is something special.
And yes — you read it right! I only toast the pecans that go into the filling. The ones on top get perfectly toasty in the oven. So glad the recipe worked so well for you!

    1. Hi Kayla,

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread pecans in a single layer on a baking sheet and toast for 8–10 minutes, stirring once halfway through, until fragrant. Let cool completely before using in the pie.

  4. I have a question that I hope might get answered before Christmas lol .. can i use coconut sugar instead of brown sugar for this recipe I know it may give it a different taste, but I’m just wondering if it would bake the same

    1. Hi Jessica,

Yes, you can use coconut sugar instead of brown sugar in a maple-honey pecan pie. It bakes the same, but the flavor will be slightly less sweet and more caramel-like. The texture of the pie will still set normally.

  5. I took a chance on this recipe since it had no comments. For 20 years I’d been using Golden Eagle syrup (or Lyle’s Golden syrup) and using the recipes on the jar or can. I can’t find either anymore in supermarkets and I’m unwilling to pay Amazon prices. I didn’t want to use Karo and your recipe looked interesting. It was delicious and looked fantastic. It took a bit longer to carefully arrange the pecan halves but it really impressed the company. Thanks, and hope you get more reviews.
