How to prepare French Apple Cake?

Start by peeling the apples and cutting them into ½-inch cubes. Then, sift flour, baking powder and salt. Meanwhile, beat butter and sugar until it becomes light and fluffy, then add eggs and beat some more until it´s well combined.  Next, fold in vanilla and rum and beat until it´s combined.  Begin adding ¼ of flour mixture at a time, until you use all of it, stirring constantly.

Beat until combined and fold in apples, then pour the batter into a 9-inch spring form or cake pan that has been sprayed with non-stick spray and lined with parchment paper. The mixture should be evenly spread. Finally sprinkle with 1 ½ tablespoon of granulated sugar and bake at 350 F, for 40 minutes or until the cake becomes golden brown on top, or the toothpick put in the middle comes out clean or with a few crumbs on it.

Expert Tips

Choose the right apples. Granny Smith apples are a great choice for French Apple Cake because their slightly tart flavor balances the sweetness of the cake, while their firm texture holds up well during baking. If you love simple apple desserts, you might also enjoy these Easy Apple Crisp Bars.

Don't overmix the batter. Once you start adding the flour mixture, mix just until everything is combined. Overmixing can make the cake dense instead of light and tender.

Cut the apples into even pieces. Cut the apples into similar-sized ½-inch cubes so they bake evenly and are nicely distributed throughout the cake.

Check for doneness. The cake is ready when the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. For another delicious apple cake, try this Apple Cinnamon Roll Cake.

Let the cake cool slightly before serving. Allow it to rest in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a cake plate. This helps the cake set and makes it easier to slice.

Dust with powdered sugar just before serving. A light dusting adds a simple finishing touch and makes this classic French Apple Cake even more inviting.

  1. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The cake is tender and packed with apples, but the subtle rum flavor is what really makes it special. A keeper for sure!

    1. Thank you so much!
I'm really glad the cake turned out well and that the rum added just the right subtle touch to make it special.
      Happy baking!

  2. Absolutely delicious! I made French Apple Cake 10 years ago with Brandy. Your version with Rum tastes so much better. Takes it to another level! I only had Spiced Rum in the cupboard but that substitute accidentally worked beautifully! The cloves, cinnamon & nutmeg in the rum was great marriage with the apple. The family loved it. So it will be printed & added to my favourite recipes book. Yum!
