How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Apple Muffins
1. Prepare the oven and muffin pan.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a muffin pan or line it with paper liners.
2. Combine the dry ingredients.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt.
3. Prepare the apples.
Place the diced apples in a separate bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of flour and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, then toss until the apples are evenly coated.
4. Make the muffin batter.
Beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat until combined, then mix in the vanilla. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry ingredients and milk. Fold in the apples.
5. Fill the muffin pan.
Scoop the batter evenly into the prepared muffin pan, filling each cup about ¾ full.
6. Bake the muffins.
Bake for about 25 minutes, or until the muffins are golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let them cool slightly.
7. Add the cinnamon sugar topping.
Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Dip each muffin in melted butter, letting the excess drip off, then coat completely with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Here's a quick overview of the preparation. For detailed instructions, exact measurements, and the complete recipe, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Expert Tips
Choose the right apples. Use firm apples with a good balance of sweet and tart flavor, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady. They hold their shape well and add great flavor to the muffins.
Cut the apples evenly. Dice the apples into small, similar-sized pieces so they soften evenly and are nicely distributed throughout the muffins.
Don't overmix the batter. Once you add the flour and milk, mix just until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing can make the muffins dense instead of soft and tender. For another delicious muffin recipe, try these Banana Blueberry Muffins with Crumb Topping.
Fill the muffin cups evenly. Divide the batter evenly between the muffin cups so all the muffins bake at the same rate.
Let the muffins cool slightly before topping. Allow them to cool for a few minutes after baking. They will be easier to handle when dipping them in melted butter and coating them with cinnamon sugar.
Coat them while they're still slightly warm. The melted butter helps the cinnamon sugar mixture stick to the muffins, creating a delicious sweet, crunchy coating.
Cinnamon Sugar Apple Muffins FAQs
What type of apples work best for Cinnamon Sugar Apple Muffins?
Firm apples with a sweet-tart flavor work best, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady. They hold their shape well during baking and add a delicious fresh apple flavor.
Why do my apple cinnamon sugar muffins sink in the middle?
This can happen if the batter is overmixed, the oven temperature is too low, or the muffins are removed from the oven before they are fully baked. Make sure your oven is properly preheated and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
How do I get the cinnamon sugar coating to stick to these apple muffins?
Dip the muffins in melted butter while they are still slightly warm, allowing the excess butter to drip off. Then coat them generously with the cinnamon sugar mixture so it sticks evenly to the surface.

If I would make them as mini muffins, about how long should I make them. Also ,I have never removed the paper liners before serving, but it looks like they were taken off befoer sugaring, right ? Or , could you just sugar the tops and leave the paper liners on the muffins?
Hi Angela,
A recipe that makes 10 regular - sized muffins will make 30 mini muffins.
Yes, paper liners were taken off before sugaring and you can sugar just the tops.

The picture looks like it has coarse white sugar on it. My brown sugar didn’t look like this when I made them.
Hi Laura,
Dip the muffins into the melted butter, drain, then coat into brown sugar and cinnamon mixture, so that they´re completely coated. The muffins are darker on the outside than sugar and this makes the sugar lighter.
Best regards,
Dragana
Do these freeze well?
Hi Austin,
They freeze really well but freeze them without cinnamon sugar topping up to 2 months.
Best regards.

And this magical combination of apples and cinnamon makes me eat them till the very end))) Have you ever tried to make a piquant accent using grounded cardamom? Of course, there is already nutmeg, I'm just curious))) Thank you for the recipe and for your cute blog!
Thank YOU, Ann. It really is perfect breakfast 🙂
