Key Ingredients

Ingredients for Dirt Cookies arranged for the recipe.

Oreo Cookies

Oreo cookies give these cookies their signature chocolate flavor and crunchy texture. They are used as pieces and crumbs in the dough, as a coating, and as a topping. If you love baking with Oreos, try my Oreo Cheesecake Cookies.

Butter

Butter adds richness and helps create the soft, chewy texture of the cookies. Use melted and cooled butter for the best results.

Brown Sugar

Brown sugar adds sweetness and moisture, helping the cookies stay soft and chewy after baking.

Eggs

Eggs help bind the dough together and give the cookies structure while keeping them tender.

Instant Chocolate Pudding

Instant chocolate pudding adds rich chocolate flavor and helps give the mousse a smooth, thick texture that is perfect for piping. If you love easy chocolate desserts made with pudding, try my Reese's Pieces Peanut Butter Chocolate Lasagna.

Heavy Whipping Cream

Heavy whipping cream creates a light and creamy texture in the chocolate topping and helps make it thick enough to pipe onto the cookies.

Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder adds an extra layer of rich chocolate flavor to the mousse and complements the Oreo cookies.

Gummy Worms

Gummy worms are the playful finishing touch that gives these cookies their classic dirt cake look. They make the cookies especially fun for kids, parties, and Halloween.

How to Make Dirt Cake Cookies

Oreo cookies coarsely crushed in a food processor.

Step 1 - Prepare the Oreos

Prepare the Oreos separately. Place 7 Oreo cookies in a food processor and pulse until coarsely crushed, leaving some larger pieces for texture. Finely crush 9 Oreo cookies to mix into the cookie dough. Finely crush the remaining 6 Oreo cookies in a separate bowl to coat the dough portions before baking.

Step 2 - Make the Cookie Dough

Beat the softened butter and both sugars until smooth and creamy. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and mix until well combined. Add the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt, mixing just until incorporated. Fold in the coarsely crushed Oreos and the fine Oreo crumbs prepared for the cookie dough.

Step 3 - Shape and Coat the Cookies

Scoop the dough into equal portions using a 2-tablespoon cookie scoop. Roll each portion in the fine Oreo crumbs prepared for coating, making sure the dough is evenly coated.

Step 4 - Bake the Cookies

Place the Oreo-coated dough on a lined baking sheet, leaving space for spreading. Bake at 350°F for 12-14 minutes. Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before decorating.

Step 5 - Make the Chocolate Mousse

Step 6 - Decorate the Cookies

Once the cookies are completely cool, pipe the mousse onto each cookie. Sprinkle with additional Oreo crumbs and finish with a few gummy worms for the classic dirt cake look.

Expert Tips

Use melted and cooled butter

Melt the butter and let it cool before adding it to the dough. This helps the ingredients combine properly without warming the eggs or affecting the texture of the cookies.

Measure Oreo crumbs and pieces separately

This recipe uses both fine Oreo crumbs and larger pieces, so measure them separately to get the right balance of texture throughout the cookies.

Don't overmix the dough

Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until combined, then gently fold in the Oreo pieces and crumbs. Overmixing can result in tougher cookies. For another soft and chewy cookie recipe where avoiding overmixing is important, try our Double Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies.

Let the cookies cool completely

Make sure the cookies are completely cool before adding the mousse. Warm cookies can cause the topping to soften and lose its shape.

Don't overbeat the mousse

Beat it just until it becomes smooth, creamy, and thick enough to pipe. If you beat it too long, it can become too thick and lose the soft, creamy texture that makes it easy to pipe.

Dirt Cake Cookies FAQs

Can I make Dirt Cake Cookies ahead of time?

Yes. You can bake the cookies ahead of time and store them in an airtight container. Prepare the mousse separately and decorate the cookies closer to serving time for the best texture and appearance.

How should I store Dirt Chocolate Cookies?

Store decorated cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator because of the mousse topping. Allow them to sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.

Can I freeze Dirt Cake Oreo Cookies?

The baked cookies can be frozen before decorating. Allow them to cool completely, place them in an airtight freezer-safe container, and freeze. Thaw them completely before adding the mousse and toppings.

Why Is the Chocolate Mousse Runny on My Dirt Cookies?

If the chocolate mousse is too runny, it may need more time to whip and thicken, or the heavy whipping cream may not be cold enough. Make sure you use instant chocolate pudding mix and cold milk and heavy whipping cream. Beat the mixture until smooth, creamy, and thick enough to pipe, but avoid overbeating. Refrigerate the mousse briefly if needed before decorating the cookies.
